UNEP LAUNCHES NEW EDUCATIONAL WEBINAR SERVICE ON THE SAFE RECYCLING OF ULABS

2022-03-25

May 7, 2020: The United Nations Environment Programme is launching a webinar initiative next week on the environmentally sound recycling of used lead acid batteries. The webinars will be available in countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia Pacific and central and eastern Europe.

The first two webinars reaching English speaking Africa will be held on May 12 and 13. Francophone Africa should hold sessions during the last week of May or early June. Events for the other regions should happen in June, July and August. There will be eight webinars in total.

Each webinar will be around 90 minutes long and are organized by the UNEP Chemicals and Health Branch. They will consist of a series of presentations followed by Q&A sessions.

Brian Wilson, representing the International Lead Association, who will be headlining many of the presentations, says: “With international travel at a standstill, these webinars will prove an excellent way to keep our mission on course in showing how used lead batteries can be safely and responsibly recycled.

“We’ve supported webinars in the past for the Basel Secretariat but this approach couldn’t be more relevant given the world coronavirus crisis.”

The webinars were initiated by Desiree Narvaez, the head of UNEP’s global lead risk reduction programme, and will be conducted in English, French and Spanish as well as other local languages as needed.

Specifically UNEP’s objectives are to show how to develop and implement a practical and effective lead risk reduction strategy; outline the key elements of sustainable, safe, hygienic and environmentally sound lead battery manufacturing and ULAB recycling; to introduce regulators to the use and application of the Benchmarking Assessment Tool process for health, safety and environmental assessments; and to explain how it can be an integral part of site inspection and licensing.
